Russell Thornton was born and grew up in North Vancouver, spent several years dividing his life between North Vancouver and places such as Aberystwyth, Wales, and Thessaloniki, Greece, and now lives in North Vancouver. His poems have appeared in numerous Canadian literary magazines and anthologies and won a number of awards, including First Prize in the League of Canadian Poets National Contest in 2000 for his poem, "The Beginnings of Stars" (A Tunisian Notebook), a piece set on Vancouver's North Shore. His poems have appeared in Greek translation in anthologies published in Greece and in Persian translation on Iranian-Canadian literary websites. His discussion with Patrick Lane is featured in the collection of talks between the newer generation and the generation of long-established Canadian poets, Where the Words Come From: Canadian Poets in Conversation (Nightwood, 2002). Thornton's recent books are The Fifth Window (Thistledown, 2000), A Tunisian Notebook (Seraphim, 2002), and House Built of Rain (Harbour, 2003), which was a finalist for the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize (BC Book Prizes) and for a national ReLit Award. His latest collection, from which the poems that appear in this issue of Studio are taken, is The Human Shore (Harbour, 2006).
